Volkswagen may be preparing to reintroduce the Beetle in an all-electric ID. form, with an ID-esque concept that the marque only refers to as ‘a concept car electric Beetle’ that’s set to appear in Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie.
The VW ID. family is set to have a starring role in the film with multiple characters getting ID. models, including the ID.4 and ID.Vizzion. Those of course are known quantities, but what we’ve as yet heard absolutely nothing about is this Beetle.
Apparently, it’ll be used by one of the film’s main characters, Ladybug (we see where they’re going with this), who is ‘a modern character who stands for female empowerment'. Folding money says this Concept and possibly even the potential production version, will eventually be called ID. Bug.
It’s not just the preserve of animation studio and VW design department hard drives either, as YouTube car channel Mighty Car Mods spotted a full-size version uncovered and out on the street for all to see.
The last Beetle left Volkswagen a little burned, with the ‘New Beetle’ sequel vastly underperforming leading to an early discontinuation – quite out of sorts for a name that’s usually associated with one of the best-selling motorcars of all time.
All that said, with an emphasis on compelling design and electric power and with VW’s interest in ‘reinventing’ the people’s car with its ID. brand, bringing back the Beetle could be a masterstroke. Indeed, it would make a fine addition to the 10-model family VW intends ID. to be by 2026, with the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz and ID.7 already introduced, and the ID.2 on the way. More as we have it.
