Mercedes unveils triple‑screened EQS interior

Frankly, we’re thankful the seats haven’t wound up with screens in them. That dashboard is pixel city, with three giant screens dominating a “high-quality surface” plastic panel. Along with housing the usual satellite navigation, radio and music functions, there’s also an AI that lives within that screen. It can employ up to 350 sensors of various types, to monitor everything from cabin occupancy, to lighting conditions, the driver’s eyelid movements and even the passenger’s language.

Mercedes claims the EQS can stimulate almost all of the human senses (we’ll let them off on taste). Visually and in terms of touch, that Hyperscreen can engage you, with its crisp OLED panels and haptic vibrating feedback – neither come entirely as a surprise.

What is fairly spectacularly sci-fi, is the EQS’s ‘soundscapes’ on the inside. These are ambient sounds that play out while driving, almost in place of engine noise. Two are available from delivery, called ‘Silver Waves’ and ‘Vivid Flux’. There are sounds for almost everything, including locking the EQS and getting out. There’s also a programme that can play out natural sounds in the cabin to relax you, including ‘Forest Glade’, ‘Sounds of the Sea’ and ‘Summer Rain’.

Mercedes is, believe it or not, no stranger to stimulating your sense of smell, with special scents available since the last-generation S-Class. There is in the EQS however a large HEPA filter that removes fine dust from the outside air as it’s coming in. More than that, it also uses activated charcoals to neutralise odours in the air. The EQS also features ‘active fragrancing’ as part of the air-balance package.

We’re not privy to what the EQS looks like on the outside yet, but its aerodynamic performance is a big deal. In addition to this interior detail, Mercedes has revealed the EQS has a benchmark-setting aero efficiency, with a Cd value from 0.20.
