The car that took track-day driving to a new level, Britain’s single-seater BAC Mono, has been called in to the pits for the last time. There are only two pieces of good news about this: one, that a second-generation BAC supercar is to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 3rd March; and two, that the original is bowing out in style with a farewell special edition.

Any Mono is special but the final edition Mono One promises to be a real keeper. There are just three cars available, making them the rarest of the rare; just over 100 Monos are thought to have been made since it first burst on to the scene in 2011.
Each of the three Mono One editions comes in a unique specification with carbon-hybrid wheels, commemorative plaques and logos, all the performance (0-60mph in 2.8 seconds) you expect plus visible carbon-fibre lower panels with contrasting bodies in Iconic White, Carbon Black or Neon Red. Each costs £158,950. As ever, more personalisation, including bespoke seat and steering wheel, is possible.

Mono One also comes with a helmet featuring a design tribute to Icelandic pop diva Bjork. This is not as random as you may think. It was the robot in Bjork’s 1999 “All is Full of Love” music video that inspired the look of the Mono. A Bjork-robot-inspired logo features on the wing and the headrest.
“When we first designed Mono and drew inspiration from Bjork’s video, we did so with a dream of sharing the experience with our close friends and having a lot of fun in the process,” said Ian Briggs, BAC co-founder and design director.
“Never could we have visualised our growth around the world and just how many remarkable garages Mono now finds itself part of. It’s now time for a new generation of BAC Mono and a new bid for world domination.”

If the new car from the Liverpool-based company is anything like as influential as the first-gen model – with its 10 global production car lap records and many high-profile awards – it will be something remarkable indeed.
So what then of the BAC Mono Mk2? We can assume it will be faster and lighter but other than that, who knows? All will be revealed in Geneva in a few weeks’ time ahead of production beginning in the summer of 2021. Wonder what music video they will choose this time?
