Why not go Over the Road at Revival?

For the casual window shopper, and the militant impulse-purchaser of expensive, not-needed car-related ephemera, Over the Road is a grassy paradise. You could quite easily go no further towards the circuit itself, caught by stand after stand of cars, clothes, art, garages, subscription offers, books, mugs, badges, hats... Luckily, Over the Road is open until 10.30pm each night, when shopping becomes much more fun, accompanied by a background of live music, dancing, drinking and eating as the sun sets and the last engine dies away.

Take our brief stroll between stalls and fairground rides. In half an hour we came across Twyford Motors - Jaguar XK specialists, Frontline Developments – handbuilt sports cars and Caterham itself, where the brand new Sprint Seven sat proudly.

Further along the rows of white tents we found Classic Restoration and Services with a 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and 1953 Silver Wraith on display. Nearby was Contour Autocraft – complex double curvature sheet metalwork specialists. Where else would you find not only such a specialised stand, but plenty of enthusiasts crowding round it?

We passed by the Brooklands Museum stand with Goodwood and Spitfire calendars, posters, mugs and keyrings for sale, and, nearby, Motor Sport magazine ready to take subscriptions with an annual offer.

Down the line, BAS International sells classic Jaguar parts, while on the corner, a smart affair, Stradale, was displaying stunning motorsport jackets, leather and canvas bags, vintage goggles and more. I could have quite easily spent a horrendous amount of money there.

Nearby we came across Paul Stephens, a Porsche specialist with several tempting cars for sale including a 356 Outlaw, Retro Touring R and 911 Hotrod based on a 1986 3.2 Carrera. Further along, Aston Workshop, an independent specialist, caught our eye with a polished DB6.

But perhaps the best of all the cars for sale in Over the Road on the Saturday of the Revival was a Ferrari 330 P2 Le Mans car. With 2.5bhp. Yes, a child's classic replica, built in Italy in 1969, with a 50cc Honda engine, offered for sale by Junior E-types. If you have to ask, you can't afford.

On the way to the bridge and, reluctantly, towards the circuit, we found trinity Engineering and Pitt Lane Ltd Classic Restoration next door to each other, Petrolheadart.com which does what it says on the tin, and stands for the London Classic Car Show and the fabulous Mille Miglia.

But we save our last shopping tribute for the Goodwood Marshals Club stand, seeking to sign people up. You can be a cadet marshal from the age of 11 – you'll be under the care of an adult marshal, assisting in areas like the paddocks at that stage. Or, aged 16-18, you can be a junior marshal. And of course, it's a recognised MSA marshalling course that you'll undertake so it's not just Goodwood where you can offer your services - Le Mans, perhaps?

As usual, there was more to see and do than we could manage this year; be rude not to see a couple of cars race, after all.

Same place, same time, next year.
