The Porsche 917 came in so many forms that it's sometimes hard to keep track of what was what. For the avoidance of doubt today we are riding on board a Porsche 917/10, a development of the 917PA which raced in Can-Am and was pedalled by none other than Jo Siffert.
Video: A Porsche 917 helmet‑cam is real exhilaration
It has become so rare these days to see 917s really being pushed hard on track that whenever we find a video of one being used in anger we have to share it. This one comes from the always mindblowing Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca. Driver Bruce Canepa allowed our friends at Racer Magazine to strap a GoPro to his helmet before he headed out to tackle the iconic Californian racetrack. It serves not only to bring us the wonderful noise of that brilliant flat-12 Porsche motor, but also demonstrates perfectly the incredible, brutal, incessent acceleration that Can-Am cars are so famous for. Absolutely mind-blowing.
