Mixed class high-powered racing cars, roaring engines and 3.74 miles of Sebring’s finest tarmac. What could be better? How about the same, but in slow motion?
Video: Sebring in slow‑motion is insanely cool
This is the open final of the 2014 SVRA Spring Vintage Classic, with a host of cars from across the series’ 11 classes sharing the tarmac. From Mini Coopers to Maseratis, Ford Mustangs to Audi R8 LMPs, every class and generation is represented in this resplendent display.
A brace of Porsches join the historic 356, including the 911-derived 934, and the Singer-designed Group C 956. A Pescarolo joins the affray, while a Trans-Am Camaro muscles its way around the curvaceous circuit. Just shy of a minute in, an open-topped Porsche 356 jostles with an Aston Martin DB4 GT, before the former goes sliding off the track, blending in remarkably well against the grass.
The SVRA, or the Sports Car Vintage Racing Association, to give it its full name, is America’s oldest and largest historic racing series, regularly holding events at legendary tracks across the nation, including Watkins Glen, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, The Circuit of the Americas and Portland International Raceway.
With an open paddock policy, and dozens of what are arguably Americas most interesting racing cars competing in sprint and endurance races, it’s a must see for any car fan stateside.
Watch as exhausts delicately blow flames, and tyres skirt the rumble strips, the suspension oscillating as it copes with the curb.
