There are many problems facing our EV future. Charging infrastructure, energy supplies, battery recycling, the cost to buy – the list goes on. But one thing that seems to be on the minds of many is range anxiety. How far can I drive an EV? Is owning an EV practical, if charging takes so long? So we set ourselves a challenge: could we drive from Goodwood to Scotland without having to stop and charge?
Video: Mustang Mach‑E – Goodwood to Scotland on one charge?
Our car would be an extended range, rear-wheel-drive Ford Mustang Mach-E, which is quoted as being able to run for 379 miles on a single charge. Our destination? There could be no more suitable destination than the Jim Clark Museum, as Clark, a two-time F1 champion, Indy 500 victor and British Saloon Car Championship winner, raced with Ford engines in F1, won at Indy with Ford power and triumphed in a Ford Lotus Cortina at Goodwood.
There was just one issue. The journey was 414 miles long, or 35 miles more than the Mach-E was capable of. But with some very careful driving, could we make it?
