Renault has given us our first proper look at the production version of the Renault 5. Now called the Renault 5 E-Tech, we also now have some tidbits of info including key figures that the new model will be sporting when it launches next year, following a full reveal at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show.

Firstly, the numbers. Coming as a surprise to no one, the Renault 5 E-Tech will pick up where the Zoe left off in terms of range, offering initially a 52kWh battery delivering up to 248 miles of WLTP-certified range. It’ll also feature bi-directional V2G-capable charging technology.

In terms of size, we now know it’ll be 3.92m long, which actually makes it shorter in length than the Peugeot E208 by some 63mm. Riding on the AmpR Small platform (formerly CMF-B EV), the Renault 5 will also feature multi-link rear suspension, which bodes well for the model’s driving dynamics.

And that’s all we’ve got for now in terms of hard facts. Prices, other versions, performance, full dimensions and so on are as yet TBC. On price, Renault’s CEO has said the Renault 5 is “out to make electric vehicles more affordable in Europe”, which suggests a price of entry to worry the Fiat and Mini-badged retro-electric establishment.

We’re still a long way from a full reveal, but the little we have seen in these design details all but confirms the real thing will be faithful to the fabulous concept.

From the shape of the car and its various contours – those R5 Turbo-inspired arches particularly – to the distinctive lights, this is shaping up to be Renault’s New Mini moment. Particularly curious is the charge indicator on the bonnet, which is effectively a light in the shape of a ‘5’ where the air intake used to be on the old cars.

Are you excited for the new Renault 5? We’re not so convinced by the slightly dorky E-Tech suffix they’ve added, but everyone will likely know it just as the Renault 5 once it’s out in the world. We of course also look forward to Alpine's high-performance version, as previewed by the A290b earlier this year...
