Triumph partners with what3words

Adventure motorcycling: it’s all about straying from the beaten path and ‘getting lost’, immersing yourself in the wilderness as far from civilisation as your riding skills allow.

But what the inspirational Instagrams don’t always tell you is what happens when things go wrong. When you get too lost for comfort or, god forbid, come a cropper.

It’s a real danger for all adventurers, and one that can spell disaster. When you’re surrounded by trees or rolling hills, unable to triangulate your position via conventional means, how do you locate yourself to the emergency services?

We’ve all been there, but Triumph is determined that its newest generation of adventurers will never need to ride by the seat of their pants, or experience such gut-wrenching disorientation again. How exactly does a motorcycle manufacturer intend on doing this, you may wonder?

Well, thanks to a new partnership with innovative app what3words and integrating its clever location technology into the My Triumph Mobile App and TFT dash, riders of Triumph’s most recent models will be able to identify, share and navigate to any precise location in the world using just three words.

Not only will this allow riders to easily share their location should they stray from their route, but it will also offer the opportunity to discover extraordinary rides and provide a convenient means of meeting up with friends in unconventional locations.

The British brand is the first motorcycle manufacturer in the world to feature what3words, offering motorcyclists a new generation of connectivity when it launches via an app update in April 2020.

what3words touts itself as ‘the simplest way to talk about location’, and we can’t disagree. By dividing the world into 3m squares, and giving each an address made up of three words, the app allows users to easily identify their location, whether it be to give to rescuers in an emergency or just to satiate their curiosity. Only last weekend, the app saved the lives of a group of foreign students who had ventured up Ben Nevis in the height of Storm Ciara.

Of the new technology, Nick Bloor, CEO at Triumph Motorcycles commented; “The Triumph brand and our riders seek adventure and this new collaboration with what3words allows our riders to explore the world with ease. We’re excited to be the first motorcycle brand to feature what3words, providing precise, easy to use navigation.”

Chris Sheldrick, CEO and co-founder of what3words, added: “The addition of what3words navigation to the iconic British brand Triumph Motorcycles is an important first for us. what3words addresses are easier to remember than a postal address and can be shared more accurately than any other location reference system, which makes it an ideal navigation solution for the adventurous motorcyclist.”
