The Classic BMW E32 (7 Series)
The E32 marked the second-generation of BMW’s 7 Series flagship limo, and it was a seminal moment for the brand from a luxury and technological perspective.
Produced between 1986 to 1994, it marked a clear advance on its predecessor, the E23, with numerous electronic features – something the first-generation car had modestly introduced to the BMW line-up. Thanks to its use of a CAN bus controller, new features included electronic damper control, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights and traction control.
In a bid to rival the Mercedes W126 for luxury and space, this was the first 7 Series to be offered with two wheelbase options, the longer models taking on the ‘iL’ designation. At the top of the line-up, the 750i/iL was the first production BMW to come with a V12 engine, the 5.0-litre unit developing 300PS (220kW) for 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.
3.5-litre straight-six options were deployed in the 730/735 models that served as the entry point to the line-up, while late in the car’s life, a V8 option was introduced under 740i badging.
