Mazda Classic Car Heritage
The story of the Mazda Motor Corporation begins in 1920, producing cork in Hiroshima Japan as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. Ltd. It wasn’t until 1931 that the company created its first vehicle. A three-wheeler trike named the ‘Mazda-Go’. Inspired by ‘the god of harmony’ but also by company President Jujiro Matsuda, whose family name is pronounced much like ‘Mazda’. From here on, the name stuck, with Mazda manufacturing its first four-wheel passenger car prototype in 1940.
After the Second World War, Mazda continued its pursuit of the small three-wheeler and goods truck market, before once again exploring a four-wheel car in the form of the Mazda R360 Coupe in 1960. Acting as a catalyst for further four-wheel development before launching the Mazda Cosmo Sports 110S in 1967.
This two-seat sports car was fitted with the first Mazda rotary engine. Starting a legacy that would lead to an iconic victory at the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours with its rotary-powered Mazda 787B.
