The Nissan Motor Company was founded when Yoshisuke Aikawa debuted his Nihon Sangyo foundries and auto part company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by its ticker name NISSAN in 1933. Having acquired Kaishinsha Motorcar Co, makers of the 1911 DAT car and the 1931 Datsun Type 11, meaning ‘Son of DAT’, Nissan was well prepared for a future in automotive manufacturing.
After initially building Austin 7s under licence, a relationship that would remain for decades, Nissan released the Datsun Type 15 in 1937. Japan’s first mass-produced vehicle. WW2 halted consumer production, before global expansion resumed into the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s and beyond.
Cars such as the Datsun SPL 201, the Datsun 320 truck, Nissan 411 4-door sedan, Nissan Patrol, and Datsun 240 Z would secure its popularity in the U.S market. While a successful record in motorsport would later inspire the creation of its Nismo arm, or Nissan Motorsport International Limited in 1985.
