For the first time ever we will witness modern competition cars setting timed laps at the Motor Circuit during Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard. The official Goodwood lap record has stood for 55 years, and, with modern cars unlikely to return, it’s entirely possible that the times recorded this weekend will remain unsurpassed – perhaps indefinitely… The SpeedWeek Shootout presented by Mastercard will take place on Sunday, but today saw the free practice where drivers were able to get their eye in.

The fastest time was set by Gordon Shedden in a 2019 Audi R8 LMS with a 1 minute 18.248 second lap. The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrara GT3 Cup of Harry King was just the blink of an eye behind at 1m 18.367s. Rounding out the podium was Lukas Halusa in the 1976 McLaren-Cosworth M23. He set a time of 1m 19.471s.
They were followed by a highly varied field, which included a 2020 Toyota Corolla BTCC car, a Jaguar XJR-9 from 1987 and even a stock road-going Lotus Exige Cup 430. All eyes will be on the stopwatch for Sunday’s historic Shootout.
