Road Atlanta is one of the great American motor racing circuits, with a long rich history as a host of everything from saloons, to sportscars to single-seaters. For today’s motoring indulgence, it’s where we’re headed.
Video: Time travel to Road Atlanta in 1976 and IMSA GTs
And when, you ask? 11th April 1976, for round three of the IMSA Camel GT Challenge, a 100-mile Sprint Race, following the AAGT Monzas as they take the fight to the dominant Porsches and BMWs of the time.
These Chevy Monzas are hopped-up monsters with big thumping V8s and wide arches, joining Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros and Panteras with US eight-pot power. Their fight is with the Porsche 911 RSR and the BMW 3.0 CSL Batmobile which had proven dominant in the class.
After a tough year of teething, it seems the Monzas found their pace, with Al Colbert taking both pole position and victory in the race. He and Mike Keyser made it a Monza one-two at Road Atlanta for the IMSA Camel GT Challenge at Road Atlanta.
