The GT3 RS is a fine motor vehicle, but a case will always be made for simplicity and lightweight over big power and downforce. That is where the Porsche 911 T comes in, essentially a basic 911 Carrera with less weight, better suspension and a manual gearbox, all in the pursuit of fun rather than simple performance.

Introduced first of all with the 991 generation of 911, the T badge debuts today on the 992 and the recipe is refreshingly simple. For the first time ever, the entry-level engine, a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo flat-six with 385PS (283kW) and 450Nm (333lb ft), is mated to a seven-speed manual gearbox – up to now only the Carrera S model has been treated to three pedals and a stick. On top of that, there’s a mechanical limited-slip differential, a sports exhaust, you get the Porsche Sport Chrono pack with PASM sports suspension which drops the ride by 10mm, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels finished in Titanium Grey are standard, shod with 245/35 and 305/30 tyres, plus the GT sports steering wheel, pretty much the same wheel as you’ll find in a GT3. If you’re feeling flash, you can option in rear-wheel-steering, too.
What about weight? Well the 911 T has had its rear seats thrown in the bin, which combined with the manual ‘box, lightweight glass, lightweight battery and less sound insulation, means a weight reduction of 35kg to 1,470kg. Zero to 62mph takes 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 181mph.

To differentiate the T from its siblings there are grey wing mirrors, grey rear badging, the aforementioned grey wheels and a grey upper windscreen tint. Then, of course, there are the stickers on the doors, and as we all know stickers increase a car’s horsepower tenfold.
The price is a considerable £98,500, £9,700 more than a regular Carrera but £4,800 less than a Carrera S. Would you buy one?
