The debate rages on regarding modern Formula 1. Whether it’s the noise of the new turbocharged cars, the quality of the racing or the divisive looks of the 2016 cars, what Formula 1 has become has been a hot topic for a while now.

Video: Modern V8 or classic V12 – which F1 car sounded better?
We don’t want to cover that. Nor in fact, does the video above. Though “Historic v Modern” may suggest a debate about noise is incoming, what you actually get is slews of post-millenium (mostly N/A) Formula One cars traversing the FOS hill climb, in comparison to a cohort of cars spanning the forty years previous. The debate here is not so obvious as NA v Turbo volume. Rather, what era can claim the best quality of sound? What era has the best looking cars? We rather like the more mechanical sound of the older cars, but the handsome, simple, yet still purposeful aero of the ‘90s machines.
