Duncan Pittaway in the 1921 GN Curtiss leapt away from the line in what must be one of Goodwood’s most unique races, followed in order by the thundering Delage DH V12 and Sunbeam Indianapolis driven by Mathias Sielecki and Julian Majzub respectively.
Sielecki took advantage of his extra four cylinders to surge past Pittaway at Woodcote and led at the end of the first lap. The nimbler GN nipped past him at Madgwick but again lost out on the Lavant Straight before regaining the lead once more round the outside of Lavant on the subsequent lap. Tyres warmed, Majzub caught the duelling leaders, creating a three-way tussle and snatching the lead.
Pittaway, Majzoub and Sielecki continued to trade the top three spots between them for the remainder of the race. Wide on the exit to the chicane, Pittaway nevertheless managed to beat over Sielecki over the line by just shy of a quarter of a second with Majzoub a close third.
