Video: 2023 Gurney Cup highlights | 80MM
Three top-flight drivers were right at the sharp end of the Gurney Cup grid in closely matched Ford GT40s. We couldn’t wait for the flag to drop and for them to barrel into Madgwick for the first time, every one of them wanting to come out the other side ahead of the pack.
The drivers? On pole was IndyCar legend Dario Franchitti, in second was three-time BTCC championship Gordon Shedden and watching from fourth place on row two was World Touring Car Champion, Rob Huff. The most decisive move was made by the BTCC man, who hustled past the Franchitti machine at St Mary’s.
He wasn’t able to convert that move into a race win. A mistake passing back markers left him with nowhere to go but the grass on the way into Madgwick. He missed his braking point and rotated the car into the tyre wall. It was a gentle nudge, but the delay lost valuable time.
The Gurney Cup is a relatively long two-driver race. The Franchitti/Shaun Lynn car made the pole into a win, Shedden and teammate Miles Griffiths kept a podium spot in third and Huff/Richard Meins’ fourth place on the grid remained unchanged by the time the chequered flag dropped.
