What’s the fastest way to get around the Goodwood Motor Circuit if your options are an AC Cobra or Jaguar E-type? It’s a question that has been asked for years, and it seems as though there will never be a definitive answer, because the result alternatates quite frequently.

That was certainly the case in the Moss Trophy during the Moss Trophy at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. Jaguars out-numbered the Cobra on the front row of the grid, with the E-types of Alex Buncombe and Oliver Bryant taking the first two places and the Cobra of James Cottingham taking third.

Come the race, it was a two-way battle between Buncombe and Cottingham. The close-quarters competition lasted for lap after lap. By the time the chequered flag dropped, a mere 1.46 seconds separated Cottingham’s AC and Buncombe’s Jaguar, with the former coming home first.

With a field full of closed-cockpit GT cars that are in the spirit of cars that raced in the RAC TT races at Goodwood from 1958 to 1962, the Moss Trophy has one of the most beautiful arrays of cars of the weekend. Alongside the Cobras and E-types, there are Ferrari 250 SWBs, Lotus Elites and Aston Martin DBR4s. It’s a joy just to see them circulate at high speed, let alone in door-to-door competition.
