“It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog,” said American writer Mark Twain once upon a time. And no truer words could capture the spirit of the Minis that compete in the Goodwood Members’ Meeting Betty Richmond Trophy each Spring.
Apart from they won’t be racing just yet this year, due to the postponement of the 78th Members’ Meeting (although you’ll see them in our Members’ Meeting favourite moments stream this weekend). So we’ve turned our eyes to last year’s edition, specifically this video from the Saturday practice.
It’s still funny to see 30 colourful Minis stream on to the circuit, attacking the course with the ferocity of cars far more powerful than themselves.
But their small size and manoeuvrability gives them an advantage over the larger cars that occupy the circuit the rest of the weekend, allowing them to take almost every corner flat out, their inside wheels occasionally lifting from the tarmac. Sliding sideways around the circuit, the drivers certainly look like they’re having an awful lot of fun…
