Have you heard of the Jaguar D-type or the Aston Martin DB3S? In all probability yes, you have. But what about an HWM-Jaguar? We’re guessing not, so let us fill you in.

HWM was a well-known racing name of the 1950s, established by George Abecassis and John Heath in Walton-on-Thames. As well as building cars for F1 and F2 HWM created two Jaguar-engined sportscars to race in the UK and in Europe. The car you see here, HWM 1, was the first, and its inaugural race was the 1956 Mille Miglia – nothing too taxing, then…

Neither car was overly successful, but HWM 1 was driven by the likes of Jack Fairman, Les Leston and Peter Blond, with numerous trips to Goodwood, and every now and then they’d out-pace entries from Jaguar, Aston Martin, Frazer Nash and Maserati. Proof of that came at the 77th Members’ Meeting, when HWM 1 with Gregor Fisken at the wheel was thrown around the Motor Circuit to a solid fourth place in qualifying for the Peter Collins Trophy.
