Charles Leclerc delighted the tifosi with victory for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was forced to accept a painful second-place finish, with team-mate Lando Norris behind in third.
Ferrari’s gamble on a one-stop strategy paid off, Leclerc able to hold off Piastri chasing with fresher tyres. After locking out the front row in qualifying, this race was McLaren’s to lose, so being bested for the win was a tough pill to swallow. Its disappointment however, was Ferrari joy. This is the first time the team have won its home race since 2019, also with Leclerc and post-race the Monegasque driver said the emotions were just as joyous second time around.
Team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. came home in fourth place in a strong weekend for Ferrari, and the constructors’ standings now show only a 39-point gap between Ferrari in third and leaders Red Bull – McLaren’s now a meagre eight points behind the defending champions.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton gained one place from qualifying, finishing in fifth. Likewise Max Verstappen’s challenging run of form continued. Having qualified seventh, he finished sixth ahead of George Russell and team-mate Sergio Pérez in eighth. The final two points positions were taken by Alex Albon with a ninth-place finish for Williams, jumping ahead of Kevin Magnussen in tenth after the Haas driver picked up a ten-second time penalty - and a ban for the next race in Baku.
