Oscar Piastri claimed his maiden grand prix victory in Hungary, joined on the podium by teammate Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. But what should have been a day of jubilation for the Australian driver was marred by team orders controversy – and that was just the drama at McLaren.
In the final round of pit stops, Norris was called in first and took the lead thanks to the undercut. Now, Piastri was behind through no fault of his own, and it was down to the team to untangle their mess, compelling Norris on the radio to do the right thing and give the place back to Piastri. After lengthy consideration, he did so, but the big moment Piastri's more than earned was shadowed by team drama. We won’t have long to wait to see how this all unfolds…
Lewis Hamilton followed up his triumphant Silverstone with another podium – his 200th (making him the first driver to reach such a milestone) – continuing Mercedes’ run of five consecutive podiums since Canada. He sparred with old rival Max Verstappen in the closing stages of the race, a collision which neither were penalised for, but only heightened frustrations for Verstappen which the reigning champion made all too well known. Ultimately, he finished fifth, behind Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc was in better spirits finishing fourth, and although suffering from a poor start, Carlos Sainz Jr.’s sixth place finish marked a solid haul of points for Ferrari. However, the team has now been overtaken by McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship, hindered by its inability to challenge for the race win as their nearest rival has only grown stronger. As for Sergio Pérez, he was able to add to the Red Bull points tally by finishing seventh, salvaging his weekend after a crash in the first round of qualifying. Likewise, George Russell was also knocked out in Q1 and was able to pick up a handful of points for the Silver Arrows in eighth.
The final points went to Yuki Tsunoda in the RB, ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, both scoring points for the second race in a row.
