McLaren celebrates Senna with Monaco GP livery

The Formula 1 paddock celebrated the life of Ayrton Senna at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix with a number of poignant moments throughout the weekend, but while the Imola circuit brought memories of tragedy, we arrive in Monaco this weekend to remember the great Brazilian’s legendary mastery of the streets of Monte-Carlo.

To commemorate Senna’s six victories in the Principality, McLaren, the team for whom he won three drivers’ championships, will race in a special livery inspired by his iconic helmet design.

Lando Norris, winner of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, and Oscar Piastri will be swapping the papaya of McLaren for the yellow of Senna this weekend. The nose features a stripe of deep blue, and the rear wing takes on a fresh green hue. The car will also be adorned in a number of ‘Senna’ logos, most notably on the front wing and on the nose.

Senna remains the most successful driver ever in the Monaco Grand Prix, his record of six wins, including five in a row from 1989-1993, has gone unbeaten for 30 years, while his qualifying lap that saw him take pole by 1.4 seconds ahead of Prost in 1988 is often considered the greatest lap of all time. It’s the perfect place, therefore, to remember the brilliance of the man.

That yellow helmet with the green and blue stripes has been instantly recognisable in households around the world since the 1980s. Ayrton Senna joined McLaren in 1988 alongside Alain Prost and went on to win the world championship at the first time of asking.

Alongside this bespoke livery for the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren has also unveiled a pre-production McLaren Senna in its own special commemorative livery. The brand’s track-focused hypercar took on the name of the team’s enigmatic driver back in 2017, and is now resplendent in a bright and intricate ‘Senna Sempre’ design that incorporates a mural of the great man’s face on the rear haunch.

Both of these designs have been created in collaboration with the Ayrton Senna Institute.
