In news that will cause ripples throughout the top end of the classic car market around the world, a McLaren F1 in as-new condition has suddenly gone up for sale.

The Carbon Black car, chassis number 69, is one of the very last road cars to have been made in 1998. There are five names in the V5 but the car has incredibly done just 2,800 miles in 18 years – that’s just 560 miles for each owner.  It is being sold on behalf of the anonymous current owner by McLaren Cars MSO Heritage division in Woking, where the car has been looked after.

And the price? Without any price quoted, McLaren is open to offers. F1s don’t change hands often but when they do – as with last year’s sale of Rowan Atkinson’s car and, at Pebble Beach, of an LM spec F1 – the sums are of the order of £8-9m. And we thought it was expensive in 1994 at £540,000!

A spokesman for McLaren Automotive told GRR: “This is arguably the F1 to go for if you have that kind of money.

“For the lucky buyer it would be like buying a brand new F1. It’s a time-warp car and thus a unique opportunity to get one of the best and last F1 road cars ever made.”

He added that it was being sold through McLaren MSO because of the company’s contact base among F1 owners and want-to-be-owners. Interested parties, he said, should contact McLaren in Woking where the car is available for viewing.

McLaren Cars itself owns three F1s which are on display in Woking: the XP5 prototype, the Le Mans winning GTR and the LM prototype.

R533 OGF comes complete with its titanium toolkit, fitting luggage and matching numbers owner’s watch – as well as all the exquisite beauty and performance that for many people makes the Gordon Murray and Peter Stevens designed machine the greatest supercar ever made.
