GRRC Originals: Everything you need to know so far

Goodwood’s series of motorsport documentaries has been going from strength to strength over the course of 2019. After its debut in 2018 the GRR team have added nine 20-minute documentaries to the collection as well as content from 16 different Goodwood events stretching from the 1998 Revival to the 77th Members’ Meeting.

The list of GRRC Originals has swelled, with production ramping up to the point that two are added every month now and the new films range from a history of Goodwood before its renewal to an in depth look at the man who owns the Beast of Turin.

The first film to join the list in 2019 was an in-depth interview with Tom Kristensen. We sat down with the nine-time Le Mans winner at his home in Denmark to chronicle his career in sports cars, BTCC, DTM and of course at Goodwood in more recent years, as well as asking whether he regretted never racing in Formula 1.

In February we took the legendary Richard Attwood back to where it all began for him, to where the Browns Lane Jaguar Factory once stood. Attwood began his working life as an apprentice at Browns Lane, long before he became the first man to win Le Mans for Porsche. There he recounted the story of his life to Ed Foster.

March saw the addition of our first film chronicling the history of Goodwood itself. To begin with we chose to focus on the least known period of the circuit’s history: that time between its life as an active circuit and the renewal in 1998. A period that Doug Nye described as being like it being ‘Frozen in Time’.

One of the most fascinating men in the classic car world was the subject of our first documentary of April. Duncan Pittaway is not only the owner of the Fiat S76 ‘Beast of Turin’, but a serial collector of incredible cars. We visited Duncan in his incredible workshop to uncover the story behind this fascinating man.

For the first time in April we released not one, but two documentaries, with the second launched just two weeks after Duncan’s story. This film, following the restoration of a Mini Countryman from rusty wreck into a full-blown racing car in time for the 77th Members’ Meeting shows the incredible work that goes into creating a historic racing car and the ups and downs of competing.

May’s documentaries formed two parts of a story in our first ever miniseries. We followed historic racer Nigel Garrett and legendary racer Stuart Graham as they prepared and raced Nigel’s mighty Faberge Camaro in the 77th Members’ Meeting. It’s a true story of comeback and trials as our dynamic duo faced unexpected problems and massive setbacks to secure a brilliant result.

In Bentley’s centenary year our first June Original focused on the story of their return to the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2003. Equipped with the only GTP car in the race, Bentley’s stunning Speed 8 took on the LMP hoards and won, but how hard was it?

Our latest documentary takes five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro back to where his racing life began, a kart track just outside of Rome, to talk about not only his rise through the ranks but the descent of the circuit from world-class racing venue to abandoned shell. Emanuele showed Ed Foster round the facility and explained how his father bought him a kart back when he was a child and began his incredible journey.

We’ll be bringing you even more stories over the coming months, including a talk on the history of Goodwood in period, the story of Nic Minassian and an extraordinary collection of cars and how Monaco presents the ultimate F1 challenge. Stay tuned for more!
