When you think of a wide-arched Ford Escort RS2000 that has been prepared for competition, you probably first conjure an image of it in a forest on gravel, slewing from one corner to the next frequently on the lock-stops. But the small Ford saloon has circuit racing history, as proved by this example. Since the early 1980s, it has been throwing its shapes on the race track rather than the rally stage.
Recently, it has been developed by Braunesiser Renntechnik in Germany to ensure it remains competitive. Braunesiser Renntechnik has been entering cars in German and European circuit racing since 1977 with experience in the European Touring Car Championship, the German Circuit Championship, the Ford Sports Cup, and the German Racing Trophy.
The Escort has been used in the Belcar Historic Cup in Belgium where it has been Historic Champion several times. Most recently, it has won its class in the Westfalentrophy at the Nürburgring last October.
Helping the 890kg car perform so strongly is an engine that combines a Cosworth 2.3-litre engine block with a Holbay Warrior 16-valve cylinder head. The result? It produced 308PS (226kW) and 295Nm (218lb ft) of torque, and has only been run for only ten hours.
Modern performance meets a desire for originality. The swollen wheelarches, for example, are Broadspeed originals, while the decentralised strut bearings take their lead from the 1975 Zakspeed factory car. Getting more intricate, the wheel bearing construction is borrowed from the 1972 Weslake Capri, as are the two-piston brake calipers.
The further into the specification you get, the more it reads like a dream roll-call for fans of fast Fords. The rear axle cooling system comes from the 1974 Cosworth Capri, the gearbox is an original ZF 5-speed and the wheels are original BBS. And so it goes on...
If you fancy being the next owner of a highly competitive Escort, it’s up for sale with Bonhams|Cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. The estimate is £40,000 to £60,000 and, enticingly, there is no reserve.
The 2025 Festival of Speed takes place on 10th-13th July. Friday and Saturday tickets are now sold out, but Thursday and limited Sunday tickets are still available.
