Bathurst is a terrifying mistress of a circuit at the best of times but picture the worst possible scene: You’re on pole (trust, this becomes the worst), the lights release the pack and as you go for your full-bore start, your Ford Falcon Supercar stalls… Everyone spears past as you stutter and scramble to restart the car. Your job now is to deliver nothing less than the mother of all recovery drives to re-claim victory at Mt Panorama.
Video: From first to last to first at Bathurst
Happily, it’s not you or me we’re riding on board with in this video. It’s Cameron McLeod – grandson of that 1987 Bathurst 1000-winning Peter McLeod – strapped into the thunderous Ford, so the shift to which we bear witness fits the description of an unbelievable recovery drive. On the first lap he’s back up with the pack, at the Esses and The Dipper. From there it’s a case of managing the car, picking his moments and scything through as efficiently and safely as possible.
