The Daytona Classic 24 by HSR Racing is always a hive of legendary racing cars, covering a timeline of more than 50 years of sportscar racing. You see things like Lola T70s going up against Porsche 917s in a showcase of those early 1970s Group 6 monsters, and Oreca LMPC cars battling with Ligier LMP3 racers of the mid-2010s.
Video: Porsche 962 and Jaguar XJR‑16: the perfect two‑car garage?
It’s a sprawling mix of machinery, absolutely packed with legendary race winners and cars that most of us could only ever dream of owning, or indeed racing around one of the most famous race tracks in the world.
We went along to Daytona in 2022 and met with Malcolm Ross, a man who had brought two incredibly special prototypes to race.
One was the Rothmans liveried Porsche 962 Group C car that won the 1985 World Endurance Championship with Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck, and also the 1986 Le Mans 24 Hours. The other was a Jaguar XJR-16, a GTP racer that competed in the 1991 IMSA GT Championship, winning four races at Road Atalanta, Mid-Ohio, Laguna Seca and Road America in the hands of Davy Jones.
Could you hope for a better pair of cars to sit in your garage? In terms of looks, we’d say this is practically unbeatable. As for driving on track, by the looks of the onboards these two look utterly mind-blowing. Is there anything better than a classic endurance prototype?
