The Scottish sportscar veteran had other ideas, though. As the race entered its final few corners, Liddell began to make a series of unfathomable overtakes in the appalling rain. After carrying so much more speed than those ahead of him out of the Kink, he fired down the hill towards Canada corner where he blazed around the outside of Eric Foss in the Mercedes-AMG GT4 and Corey Fergus in his McLaren 570S GT4. It was a spectacular moment of skill and bravery that saw him jump from fourth to second, as he somehow managed to keep the Camaro pointing in the right direction.

That left him with two corners to go to close up a half-second gap to Kuno Wittmer, who looked on course to take a simple victory. Surely that outrageous overtake around the outside of two cars would be the peak of Liddell’s afternoon?

Well, in quite remarkable scenes, Wittmer’s McLaren slowed dramatically as he made his way up the hill to take the chequered flag, and Liddell was able to flash past on the line to take the win by 0.070 seconds. A stunning result. It eventually transpired that Wittmer had inadvertently activated his pitlane speed limiter, a costly error indeed.
