Ever heard of Whelen Modified Tour? If you're not in the US then probably not. It's a stock car racing series that features in NASCAR’s Modified Division. Not only is it NASCAR’s oldest division, having been formed at NASCAR's creation in December 1947, but it’s also the only open-wheeled race, making for some brilliant wheel-to-wheel action.
And the cars themselves are quite something. Based on tubular chassis and with what little bodywork they have constructed from sheet metal they are substantially different from their Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series counterparts. The naked racers are usually far shorter and wider than a Cup car and are powered by 6-odd litre small-block V8 engines. While they make from 625 to 700 horsepower, the engine's power is reduced on large tracks such as New Hampshire Motor Speedway for safety reasons.
This clip shows the photo finish between no.7 Patrick Emerling, no.36 Bobby Santos III and no.51 defending series champion Justin Bonsignore, and with not one, but three cars going side-by-side across the line fighting for victory it just might be the most exciting finish you see all year. Maybe it's time to watch more modified NASCAR...
