Ford and endurance racing are inextricably linked to one event: the GT40's 1-2-3 victory in the 1966 Le Mans 24-hour. With a new Ford GT having entered endurance racing in both the IMSA and WEC championships, it's obvious that the Blue Oval was keen to relive that glory.
And what better way than to take another victory at Le Sarthe in the 50th anniversary year of that famous sticking-it-to-Ferrari win of 1966? OK, there was no chance of taking overall honours in the 24 hour – the classes don't allow for it. But in the WEC, the Ford GT did indeed take pole and the win.
It was just part of a very good year for the GT. In IMSA, it took six poles and four wins – plus another six podium positions. In WEC, it claimed two poles and the same number of wins – plus another three podium finishes. Ford itself reviews the season in this video.
