Electric Polestar 3 SUV promises 372-mile range

No sooner has Polestar revealed the latest hot version of its Polestar 2 saloon, than it’s now preparing to launch its third car, the imaginatively-named Polestar 3. This is Polestar’s first SUV, which will be on sale from next year with provisions for autonomous driving and serious specs.

Polestar is claiming the car will feature best-in-class LiDAR sensor tech with centralised NVIDIA computing power, while the goal in terms of range is over 372 miles (600km). Those numbers sound eerily similar to its Geely Group stablemate, the Lotus Eletre, which is also the first electric SUV for its parent brand. We wonder how much, if at all, the Eletre and the Polestar 3 will share under the skin.

The SUV market is the most lucrative in the industry right now and is essential for any fledgling marque with ambitions of growth. Ambitious is exactly what Polestar is, with the goal of growing its 2021 sales figures of 29,000 ten-fold, up to 290,000 by the end of 2025. Aiding that will be the launch of a new car every year up to 2025, beginning with the Polestar 3 next year and continuing with the Polestar 5 and more.

“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots. This is a major milestone for our company, one that boosts our growth trajectory and takes us into our next phase.”
