Mini will now electrify your classic

“If Alec Issigonis could design the classic Mini again today, the iconic small car would have an electric motor.” That’s the first sentence in the latest Mini press release. And it is undoubtedly true. Sir Alec died in 1988 but that hasn’t stopped Mini following in the footsteps of Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, AC and others and offering to convert its most famous creation to battery power under the new Mini Recharged label.

It’s an all-British, all-official, Cowley-centred operation that has its roots in the one-off Mini electric conversion that a group of workers came up with in 2018 as a motor show novelty. Since then Mini has concentrated on its new electrified Minis – they take one in five of all Mini sales now – while converting the classic Mini has been left to aftermarket specialists. Until now.

A Recharged Mini gets a 121PS (90kW) electric motor and single-speed transmission for 0-62mph in around 9.0 seconds – a bit quicker than an original Mini Cooper S. Mini says range is predicted to be 100 miles. Like other electric restomods, the petrol engine and gearbox are numbered and stored so the car can be returned to original spec if required.

The reversible nature of the project is echoed by what Mini says is careful handling of the car’s historical heritage with as few changes to the car as are needed. It looks like a classic Mini outside and inside, where the familiar centre dial is retained but updated with new information, such as remaining range.

There is, as yet, no price for all this. But as a guide, prominent aftermarket Mini conversion specialist Swindon Powertrain offers a “crate” electric motor for £10,620 including the VAT – but not including the batteries, charger or the conversion work. Converting a classic to battery power has never been cheap.

But then who wouldn’t love it? The Mini is surely made for electric power with its tiny size and kart-like handling. With instant torque and no mechanical noise, it would be a blast around tight London streets – where you would be free to roam without having to pay ULEZ charges.

“With Mini Recharged, we are connecting the past with the future of the brand," says Mini chief Bernd Körber.
