New Hyundai Tucson teased

Welcome to the world of ‘parametric dynamics’. That’s Hyundai’s catchphrase for a new look to be previewed by the next Tucson SUV, and from these first teaser pictures it’s going to be very distinctive.

Car design is rapidly being dominated by new vehicle illumination technologies design, evidenced by the Tuscon. Hyundai calls the design “advanced and experimental” but there’s nothing concept car about the machine you see here, with its spaceship-like front end: this is the production version that’s due to be unveiled this month.

So what is parametric dynamics? According to the blub, it’s a design “that utilises lines, faces, angles and shapes to create kinetic jewel-like surface details”. Just like those headlights then: they are hidden when not on and have daytime running lights that appear part of the grille. They do make quite an impression. The lights at the back are almost as distinctive.

There is more dynamically parametric design in the chiselled, angular surfaces along the flanks and over the wheels. This is a bigger breed of Tucson than before, wider and with a longer wheelbase, but Hyundai designers say their new design language gives it an athletic appearance.

“The Tucson’s advanced, experimental design is true to its pioneering spirit and raises the game in the industry’s most competitive segment,” Hyundai design chief SangYup Lee tells us.

Hyundai designers have been busy on the inside too with a new dual cockpit theme which, from the teaser drawing, looks more sports car than SUV-like, but we will know more about it, and the new model’s distinctive new design, when the covers come off on 15th September.
