The Dacia Spring will be the UK's cheapest EV

The Dacia Spring has been confirmed for UK sale and is likely to be the cheapest electric car (not a quadricycle like the Citroen Ami) available when it lands in 2024. Priced from €15,800 in France, it will likely cost closer to £20,000 in the UK.

Dacia has been toying with the idea of bringing the Spring to the UK for over a year. Still, its resounding success on the continent – with more than 120,000 orders, increasing Dacia’s global sales by 6.8 per cent  – has made the opportunity impossible to resist.

The Dacia’s low price has hit a chord with private buyers, who account for 75 per cent of sales. And, while multi-car households often buy Springs, according to Dacia said households used them for 90 per cent of mid-week trips.

Data collected from the Dacia Spring’s connected services suggest it will be ideal for urbanites. The average Spring journey lasts less than 20 miles at a speed of just 16mph – a figure you’d be lucky to hit in central London rush hour.

It’s an ideal ecosystem for this car, which has a 33kWh battery, a 44PS (32kW) electric motor and a top speed of 78mph. A full recharge takes less than one hour using a public charger, five hours using a 7.4kWh wall charger or 14 hours with a three-prong plug.
