After weeks of teasing, the Vauxhall Experimental concept has been revealed ahead of its public unveiling at the IAA Mobility show in Munich next month. It gives us an idea of what Vauxhall's future looks like under the Stellantis ownership after years of neglect by General Motors.
Quelle surprise, the Experimental is an electric SUV, but as EVs are the future and, like it or not, SUVs sell, we won't make too much of a fuss about that.
The Experimental has a sleek design and tapered rear end that replaces traditional chrome highlights with LED lighting strips. Electric motors at either end mean it's also four-wheel drive.
At the front of the car, you'll find an illuminated Vauxhall badge sitting on the company's new 4D Vauxhall Vizor grille, which hides the car's self-drive sensors. Active flaps at the front of the car help it cut through the air more efficiently.
Around the side, special tyres developed by Goodyear feature recycled rubber and wrap Ronal wheels with active aero. You'll also find wing lighting that forms an illuminated scar down the side of the car, while at the back light up "VAUXHALL' scroll does the same job as the badge at the front.
Inside, Vauxhall claims the Astra-sized Experimental boasts (now defunct) Vectra-like space with a roomy feel enhanced by a fold-away steering wheel made possible by steer-by-wire technology. The seats are also clever, featuring 3D mesh technology that's light but very comfortable.
The highlight of the interior is a new augmented reality head-up display with AI technology and voice recognition. You navigate the system using the Pure Pad control that floats between the two front seats.
A final touch is the cab's electrochromic fabrics that immerse occupants in atmospheric light that, Vauxhall says, "create a perfect environment for wellbeing" but can also act as a safety feature, warning of cars hidden in your blind spot.
Mark Adams, Vauxhall's Vice President of Design, said: "Our new Vauxhall Experimental gives a more extreme interpretation of our Bold and Pure design philosophy. It gives shape to our vision of the future. Many of its design elements and the mindset behind it will be visible in future production vehicles.
"The exterior design delivers an optimised aerodynamic performance in combination with a stunning silhouette while the interior offers an immersive and emotional user experience".
