Japan is a nation of contrasts and parallels to our own Western culture, whether it's food, culture or cars. Some of their production cars are just plain quirky, some we don’t understand, others entirely enthrall us. So if you imagine that their concept cars take ‘Japanese-ness’ to the ultimate extreme, you’d imagine right.

So we thought we’d count down some of the weirdest, most wonderful Japanese concept cars of all time. It's by no means an exhaustive list but a reminder, if it were needed, of just what the Land of the Rising Sun is capable of imagining into existence.

From the absolutely wild Toyota EX-III of 1969, to the Honda J-VX, to the Mitsubishi HSR-II, discover our nine favourites. Looking back at them, the cars might be crazy but most of the names could have come from a photocopier catalogue. Oh, Japan. Which is your favourite? Let us know.
