It’s an argument we will keep making that sportscar racing was at its most beautiful in the 1950s. Together with the Sussex Trophy, the Madgwick Cup brought together one of the finest grids of the 2022 Goodwood Revival. This glorious collection 2.0-litre streamliners from the likes of Porsche, Lotus, Maserati and so many other historic racing names.
The racing is pretty good too. The open cockpit nature of these diminutive racers means the drivers can get nice and close in their wheel-to-wheel manoeuvres, and even though they only have relatively small engines they’re still incredibly excitable cars with sideways action never far away. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable half hour or so of historic racing, and while the fight for the win might not be enthralling, there’s plenty to look at elsewhere to keep you entertained.
