James Hunt, one of motorsport’s most memorable figures, is the centre of our celebrations at the 83rd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. His Championship-winning McLaren M23 will proudly sit in the paddocks, but a special item will also be on display in the Goodwood Shop: Hunt’s iconic helmet.

More than just a piece of protective gear, this instantly recognisable helmet with its red, blue and yellow motif tells the story of a fearless driver whose charisma, courage and raw speed defined a generation of Formula 1.
Shaped by the racing past of its daring owner, the helmet’s chipped paint stands as a testament to the battles it endured, from Hunt’s underdog first win with Hesketh to that Championship-clinching performance with McLaren at Fuji. Despite Hunt’s unpredictability in many aspects of his life, this helmet remained a famous, unchanged staple.
Holding memories of Hunt’s fierce rivalry with Niki Lauda — when Hunt won the 1976 Drivers’ Championship by a single point — this helmet shows the grit and determination of his driving mindset and style. Its Texaco, Goodyear and Marlboro detailing instantly evokes the spirit of motorsport’s wildest era.
This helmet isn’t just part of James Hunt’s racing equipment, it’s a symbol of the audacity, flair and rivalry that defined his racing career. And just a step away from the roar of the action on the Motor Circuit, you can discover this historic helmet at the Goodwood Shop.
The Shop will be open 07:00-19:00 on Saturday and Sunday for you to get a close up look at this wonderful piece of motorsport history and browse items commemorating our celebration of 'The James Hunt Years', including a T-shirt and a striking poster. If you’re not transfixed trackside, then this is the place to be.
