Race report: John Aldington Trophy 73MM – Members Meeting Favourite Moments

28th March 2020
Henry Biggs

Andrew Jordan drove a faultless race from pole, stretching out a two-tenths lead in qualifying to twelve and a half seconds at the end of 13 laps. The spectator favourite tussles in this one-make race for Porsche 911s and 901s took place further down the order.

Jordan was pursued for much of the race by Mark Sumpter, in turn followed by Phil Hindley and a very sideways Mark Bates tussling for third. A quintet composed of Santiago Orjuela, Dider Denat, Juan Pablo Orjuela, Bill Wykeham and Chris Harris then battled throughout for fifth place.

A spin by Sumpter towards the end of lap four dropped him down two places, meaning the Hindley and Bates duel was now for second. A lap eight move up the inside by Bates at Lavant saw both cars side by side into the kink and despite a very sideways line through Woodcote, Bates made the move stick. The two remained inseparable for the rest of the race but Hindley was unable to reclaim the second spot.
