The Arundell Cup’s Formula Juniors served up some classic racing for anyone lucky enough to attend Sunday’s opening race.

As the flag dropped, Alex Ames took the lead in his #2 Cooper-Ford T59 ahead of the #53 Cooper-Ford T59 of Sam Wilson, who promptly found himself down in third behind Clive Richards’ #193 Lotus-Ford 22. He would almost immediately take the place back, quick changes of grip position was how this race would unfold.

The now third-placed, Richards immediately found himself under pressure from Callum Grant in the #57 Merlyn-Ford, who would eventually overtake him.

Back at the front, the leader took full advantage of his car’s stability under braking, allowing Wilson in second to do all the work with a car that looked far less tied down under braking. Nevertheless, the fight for position slowed both machines down, allowing Grant to pull off an inspired move, slipstreaming behind Wilson and carrying the momentum to pass Ames.

In what would be one of the most competitive races of the day, the lead – and much of the chasing pack – would switch places several times over the 15-lap race, confirming the Arundell Cup as one of most competitive fixtures of a Members’ Meeting weekend. If you missed it, fear not, for you can watch the whole race here.
