Video: Five-way sportscar battle leads to tight overtake at Goodwood

19th June 2020
Ben Miles

You’re battling for the lead at Goodwood, your bonkers Kurtis 500S is battling a stunning Aston Martin for glory, what don’t you want in your path? How about five cars you need to lap all battling furiously?

In this case, from 2014’s 72nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Geraint Thomas is in the Kurtis, and needs to pick his way through a quintet of stunning ’50s sportscars – including a Jaguar C-type and another Aston Martin DB3.

Rather than waiting through the chicane he decides to dispatch as many of them in one go as he can. Thomas passes three of them before he takes the chicane, but what he misses is behind him an extraordinary bit of opportunist overtaking, taking Thomas’s lead. It’s just a shame that the brilliant overtake was undone when the hammer went down.
