Video: Hear this 8.0-litre Chevrolet silence the Goodwood crowds

It’s a car you’ll struggle not to get emotional about. The Camaro’s bass-heavy idle morphs into a full-throated bellow as that colossal engine stretches its legs down the straights — arguably the best noise of the entire weekend at the 82^nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. Few cars sound quite so gleefully unhinged.

Is it the ideal racing engine? Probably not.

Each cylinder displaces more than the entire engine of a modern supermini, a fact that manifests as more than 700PS (515kW) and 800Nm (590lb ft) of torque. But the truly staggering figure is the torque available at idle: 600Nm (443lb ft) the moment the engine fires, before you’ve even so much as brushed the throttle. Our thoughts go to its rear tyres.

“The car does not like corners,” Hans admits with a grin. You can see why. Anywhere the Camaro accelerates, it leaves long, smoky signatures as the rear tyres fight to funnel its monumental torque into the tarmac. In terms of outright lap time it’s not exactly the sharpest tool in the paddock, but in terms of sheer spectacle and hilarity, it is peerless.

Point it down a straight, however, and the Chevrolet is suddenly on home turf, devouring the distance between corners faster than its V8 drinks fuel — which is to say, at an alarming rate. Compared with modern GT3 machinery, the Camaro is a wonderfully straightforward brute. Racing ABS and a sequential gearbox are the only real deviations from what you could have driven out of a showroom in 2010.

It’s also a wholesome family project. Hans, normally focused on preparing Lamborghini Gallardos for competition, first spotted the Camaro while visiting his daughters in the US. They all agreed (although not their mother) it had the makings of a special race car.

Watch the footage and you’ll struggle to disagree.
