Video: The golden age of rally returned at 72MM

Group B rally cars are famous for four-wheel-power sliding around rally stage corners, brushing scenery as they go, but (although we have one of those, too) you don’t always need a rally stage to see them in action.

The 72nd Members’ Meeting welcomed cars like the Audi Quattro, Lancia Integrale, MG Austin Metro 6R4, Lancia 037, Renault 5 Turbo and Ford RS200 on track, giving spectators a chance to feast on the noise of a rally machine at full skelp for more than the fleeting seconds you get at a WRC event.

Combining bone-dry tarmac with (mostly) four-wheel-drive cars meant sideways action was few and far between. Still, it would be hard not to appreciate the acceleration of the world’s most powerful rally cars geared to do not much more than 115mph.

Naturally, the exhibition wasn’t devoid of incident. The Chicane turned out to be an Achilles heel for the rally cars – designed to slide around bends rather than drive through them – claiming the front splitter of an Audi Quattro. This might have all been a decade ago, but we can now enjoy it all over again thanks to this never-before-seen footage from 72MM.

The 82nd Members’ Meeting will take place on 12th and 13th April 2025 and tickets are now available for Members and Fellows of the GRRC.
