1991 was a monumental year for Formula 1. Ayrton Senna won his third and last Drivers' Championship, three-time champion Nelson Piquet retired, and future world champions Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen made their debuts.
Video: Mansell v Prost v Senna – screaming F1 qualifying battle
The eighth round at Silverstone was no less dramatic, with the race fought in close contention by Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Riccardo Patrese, Gerhard Berger, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Jean Alesi. Early in the race, Senna took the lead from Mansell while Berger hit Patrese and spun him out.
Eventually, Mansell ruled victorious, while Senna ran out of fuel on the last lap, and had to be collected by Mansell on his victory lap. Berger took second, followed by Prost, Senna, Piquet and Bertrand Gachot.
Qualifying itself was just as exciting, as proven by this awesome commentary and footage, filmed in high quality live stereo, no less.
In qualifying Nigel Mansell took pole, with Senna close behind in second. In third place Patrese was followed by Berger, Prost, Alesi, Moreno, Piquet, Maurício Gugelmin and Stefano Modena.
Watch from 22.46 as Senna sets a blistering lap time, moving up to second on the grid, and then again from 42 minutes, as Alain Prost takes to the track in the all-new Ferrari 643.
