One of our favourite classes at the Monaco Historic are the cars that defined F1’s headlong leap into innovation and speed: the post-1966 3-litre machines of Lotus, Ferrari, Matra, Surtees, McLaren and more. Star cars include the Lotus 49B, driven by a certain Adrian Newey, as well as the Matra MS120C, Lotus 72 and Ferrari 312.

Dominating the race to begin with was the Surtees TS9 of Michael Lyons, which was an easy pole-sitter thanks to a 1:34.006 time that put him a second and a half ahead of Katsuaki Kubota in the Lotus 72. However, there were a few hiccups throughout the race, with Lyons coming into issues part-way through, with the car slowing to a crawl at Rascasse. The Ferrari 312B3 Spazeneve of Franco Meiners also managed to rotate mid-battle with a Matra. In the end it was Kubota who held on to the end, to claim the chequered flag.
