Video: Bentley Flying Spur V8 Review
Bentley make cars. They make a saloon, an SUV and a coupe. Just like many other car manufacturers do. But, actually, it’s really not that simple. Bentley hand makes its cars. Bentley charges north of £100,000 for base models of its cars, and it is allowed, without any side-eye, to include the word ‘luxury’ in describing its cars. And now there’s a new one, or rather an old one with a V8.
The Flying Spur now sits astride the Bentley range, with the Mulsanne (and its legendary V8) now consigned to the history books, so no pressure. When it first arrived it was fitted with a big, weird W12 engine, weird not because it acted strangely, but because pretty much only Bentley uses such a configuration. Now that big W12 has been crowbarred out, and in its place dropped a little V8. OK, so it’s over four-litres, but in comparison to the big W12, it’s pretty small.
So what difference does this make to a Flying Spur? It’s 100kg lighter, and is, Bentley says, more ‘agile’ than ever. So does it still retain that undefinable essence that Bentley are famous for? We drove one to find out.
