The McMurtry Automotive Spéirling that debuted at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is back for 2022, but it ought to be going a hell of a lot faster. At least, it’ll need to, if it wants to be in with a shot of the outright Goodwood Hill record, which the company and the driver, Max Chilton, think it might.

This monster turn of speed has come from the car’s aerodynamic performance being optimised and turning the fan up. Figures of around 2,000kg of downforce are possible even from a standstill, meaning this car produces more downforce than an F1 car up to 150mph.
The car’s powerful electric motors fed by a 60kWh battery pack, and at under 1,000kg its acceleration figures are striking, managing 0-62mph in 1.5 seconds. The 150mph top speed is currently limited by the special Hillclimb gearbox the car will be running – very serious indeed. The car also uses a cutting-edge Molicel cell design, which has advantages in power density for over 30 minutes of track time running. More details on this tech are due out over the coming weeks.

For now, Max Chilton and the McMurtry Spéirling have the highly sturdy record of the Volkswagen ID-R to fight at FOS, with the target being 39.9 seconds from start to finish on the 1.16-mile course. Chilton will have current British hillclimb championship leader Alex Summers on hand for some guidance too. We can’t wait to see what it can do.
