As far as garden parties go, The 11th Duke of Richmond has them pretty well worked out. As the host and figurehead of the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the Duke has been welcoming the great and the good of the motorsport world – along with tens of thousands of knowledgeable fans – to his house and grounds for 29 years. And somehow, the event gets bigger and better every time.
As Saturday rolled around, revellers were set to experience a full-day of hillclimb action, memorable balcony moments, and a well contested Timed Shootout qualifying session, before the traditional black tie Saturday Night Ball brought the day to a close.
There was plenty to put us all in a celebratory mood before the party, from three-time 500cc motorcycle world champion Wayne Rainey being honoured on the balcony of Goodwood House, to a commemoration of BMW M’s 50 years in motorsport around the Central Feature.
Throw in ceaseless hillclimb action from F1 greats, Le Mans legends, tin top titans, IOMTT-winning superbikes and pre-war pioneers. All sandwiched by exciting runs from the very latest releases by the world’s supercar manufacturers, and Saturday at the 2022 Festival of Speed certainly lived up to the billing.
All that’s left now is to shake off any remaining fuzziness from the night before, and to approach Sunday with even more of that famous Goodwood gusto. The Duke would expect nothing less of his guests.
