Proving you don’t need excessive amounts of power to have excessive amounts of fun is the all-new Toyota GR 86, seen making its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.

Proving their mastery of lightweight and well-balanced cars once again, as is often Toyota’s case throughout their extensive motorsport history and particularly so within their recent ‘golden era’,  the rear-wheel-drive four-seater has a major focus on retaining the “essential fun-to-drive” characteristics developed by Toyota in both the GT86 and GR86.

While the original GT86 and BRZ used a 2.0-litre engine, the new version features Subaru’s horizontal 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit offering 235PS (173kW) and 250Nm (185lb ft) of torque, capable a 0-62mph time in 6.3 seconds. That’s a 1.1 seconds quicker than its predecessor.

The GR 86 will go on sale in Japan later this year, with a specific UK and Europe launch date in 2022 awaiting confirmation.
